The Dallas Cowboys may have fixed parts of their defense this offseason, but one major question still hangs over the franchise. Who becomes the game-changing force that can carry the unit when pressure rises? That conversation has now sparked fresh speculation around Pittsburgh Steelers superstar T.J. Watt, a player some analysts believe could eventually become Dallas’ biggest trade target.
The idea sounds bold, even unrealistic at first glance. Yet after Dallas lost Micah Parsons last year and struggled to create consistent disruption on defense, the Cowboys’ need for an elite pass rusher remains impossible to ignore. While the offense kept piling up points, the defense often failed to deliver in critical moments. That imbalance is why Watt’s name is suddenly entering Cowboys discussions across NFL circles.
Cowboys-T.J. Watt rumors gain momentum after defensive struggles
Dallas made several defensive additions during the offseason, including trades and draft investments aimed at improving depth and physicality. Still, many around the league believe the roster lacks one true defensive superstar capable of changing games on his own.
That is where Last Word on Sports analyst Anthony Palacios connected the dots between Dallas and Watt.
“T.J. Watt joining the Dallas Cowboys would be the dream scenario,” Palacios wrote Thursday. “The team tried to trade for Maxx Crosby this offseason, but failed to meet the Las Vegas Raiders’ asking price.”
“However, the offseason has been highly productive in terms of improving the defense. The team traded for Rashan Gary while drafting Malachi Lawrence and Jaishawn Barham.”
“They also traded for Dee Winters to strengthen the depth, but they still lack a true superstar. Gary is coming off an unproductive 2025 campaign, so there isn’t a guarantee he could get established. If everything falls apart during the 2026 season, the team could look to aggressively pursue Watt before the trade deadline.”
The comments quickly fueled debate among fans because Dallas has already shown interest in adding elite defensive talent. Their failed pursuit of Maxx Crosby earlier this year only strengthened that belief.
Steelers face difficult long-term decision on T.J. Watt
Even though Watt remains one of the NFL’s most respected defenders, signs are emerging that Pittsburgh could eventually face a difficult financial decision. ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler recently suggested Watt should be viewed as a possible trade candidate because the Steelers are preparing for future investments elsewhere on defense.
Nick Herbig is expected to become part of Pittsburgh’s long-term plans, while Alex Highsmith already carries a significant contract. That financial reality has sparked speculation that the Steelers could eventually listen to offers for Watt if the situation changes after the 2026 season.
Despite posting numbers below his usual dominance last year, Watt’s resume still speaks for itself. The 31-year-old linebacker owns 115 career sacks and has built a reputation as one of football’s most disruptive defenders. For a Cowboys team still searching for a defensive identity, that kind of production could become impossible to resist.
