Patrick Mahomes had a light but painful moment away from the field this week. The Kansas City Chiefs quarterback, who is currently rehabbing a serious knee injury, lost a friendly bet to rookie teammate Jeffrey Bassa. The wager came during a college football bowl game and ended with Mahomes wearing his teammate’s jersey at the Chiefs’ training facility.
The moment happened while Mahomes continues rehab from a torn ACL and LCL suffered in mid-December. With Kansas City’s season already winding down, the clip gave fans a rare laugh during a tough stretch for the team and its injured star quarterback.

The bet was tied to the Orange Bowl, played on Thursday, where Mahomes’ former school Texas Tech Red Raiders faced Oregon Ducks, the alma mater of Jeffrey Bassa.
Oregon dominated the game and won 23–0, sealing both the bowl victory and Mahomes’ loss in the wager. Soon after the game, Bassa posted a short video on Instagram Stories.
The clip showed Mahomes sitting inside the Chiefs’ facility wearing Bassa’s No. 2 Oregon jersey while continuing his rehab work. Fans quickly reacted online.
One user joked that “QB1 is really going through it,” while another said it might be the first time Mahomes has worn Nike gear in years, given his long-time deal with Adidas.
Patrick Mahomes was injured on December 15 during a game against the Los Angeles Chargers, where he tore both his ACL and LCL. Since then, Kansas City has struggled without him.
The Chiefs lost to the Tennessee Titans and Denver Broncos, falling out of playoff contention. Mahomes remains focused on recovery, and the team hopes he will be ready for the start of the 2026 NFL season.
Despite the setback, Mahomes recently expanded his Adidas partnership to include a new golf line, showing his off-field work continues while he heals.
Kansas City will close its season on Sunday in Las Vegas, facing a Raiders team looking to secure draft positioning for the 2026 NFL Draft.
For now, Mahomes’ rehab and good-natured loss to a rookie teammate have become one of the lighter stories in an otherwise difficult stretch for the Chiefs.
