Rashee Rice’s legal trouble creates new concern for Kansas City Chiefs ahead of the 2026 season
The offseason already carried enough pressure for the Kansas City Chiefs. Now, another major issue has landed on Andy Reid’s table. Wide receiver Rashee Rice will reportedly miss upcoming OTAs and mandatory minicamp after a probation violation led to a 30-day jail sentence connected to his 2024 crash case in Dallas.
For Kansas City, this is no longer just an off-field story. Rice remains one of the team’s most important offensive players, and his latest setback arrives at a time when the Chiefs are still trying to reshape their roster after a disappointing 2025 season. Suddenly, the wide receiver room looks shaky again.
The latest update surfaced when KSHB 41 reporter Matt Foster reported thatRasee Rice tested positive for marijuana, violating terms tied to his probation agreement. As part of the ruling, Rice must now serve 30 days in jail, which sidelines him during a key stretch of the offseason program. The main issue is that the timing creates a problem for Kansas City. Rice will miss organised team activities scheduled from May 26-28 and June 1-3, along with mandatory minicamp from June 9-11. Those sessions usually help quarterbacks and receivers build rhythm before training camp opens later in the summer
That alone would concern Kansas City. But there is another layer to this story. Hours after the legal news broke, ESPN insider Adam Schefter reported that Rice recently underwent a cleanup procedure on his right knee. Schefter shared on ESPN that doctors removed loose debris that caused inflammation, and the recovery timeline could keep Rice sidelined for roughly two months.
The situation becomes tricky for the Chiefs because the rehab process may now slow down while Rice serves time in Dallas County jail. According to Schefter’s latest report, Rice had the procedure before learning about the probation ruling.
The legal case dates back to March 30, 2024, when Rice became involved in a high-speed multi-vehicle crash on North Central Expressway in Dallas. Then, on July 17, 2025, he accepted a plea deal involving two third-degree felony charges. The agreement included five years of probation, more than $115,000 in restitution payments and a required 30-day jail sentence.
Dallas County District Attorney John Creuzot addressed the matter in an official statement released after the plea agreement in July 2025. “When someone with Mr. Rice’s public platform chooses to drive so recklessly, there is a responsibility to acknowledge the danger posed to others and take accountability.”
Meanwhile, the Kansas City Chiefs now enters the summer with more questions than answers at receiver. Xavier Worthy still carries massive upside, but the Chiefs lack proven depth if Rice misses more time than expected. That reality explains why veteran names like Stefon Diggs continue surfacing in offseason rumours around Kansas City.
