Former NFL player Keith Gray has been found guilty in a massive $328 million Medicare fraud case. A federal jury convicted the ex-University of Connecticut football captain on nine criminal counts this week. According to the U.S. Department of Justice, prosecutors proved that Keith Gray helped run a scheme that billed Medicare for genetic tests that patients did not need.
The government said those tests were supposed to check the risk of heart disease and other conditions. But investigators told the court there was no medical reason for most of them. Even so, Medicare was billed hundreds of millions of dollars. Court records show the total amount charged was about $328 million. From that, Medicare paid out roughly $54 million. Now, Keith Gray is facing serious prison time. Each count carries up to 10 years in prison. His sentencing date will be announced later.
Former UConn captain Keith Gray convicted on nine federal charges in $328 million Medicare fraud and money laundering case
The U.S. Department of Justice announced the verdict on Friday. Prosecutors described Keith Gray as a key figure in organizing the fraud. They said he worked with others to arrange genetic testing for Medicare patients, even when doctors had not properly approved or requested those tests.
During the trial, prosecutors explained that the scheme also involved illegal kickbacks. The jury convicted Keith Gray of conspiracy to defraud the United States, conspiracy to pay and receive health care kickbacks, five counts of violating the Anti-Kickback Statute, and three counts of money laundering.
Federal officials also told the court that some of the Medicare payments were used to buy luxury vehicles. According to evidence presented, Keith Gray purchased a Mercedes-Benz SUV valued at more than $154,000 and a Dodge Ram truck worth more than $142,000. Prosecutors said these purchases were part of efforts to move and spend the fraud proceeds.
Before this case, Keith Gray was known for football. He started all 13 games at center for the University of Connecticut in 2007 and served as team captain. In 2009, he signed with the Carolina Panthers as an undrafted free agent. He was later released and spent time with the Indianapolis Colts practice squad.
After short stints in professional football, including time in the United Football League, he moved on from the sport. Now, instead of football headlines, Keith Gray is waiting for sentencing in federal court, where he could face decades behind bars.
