Detroit Red Wings GM Steve Yzerman calls for major roster upgrades after frustrating NHL season

As the Detroit Red Wings are heading into another critical offseason, GM Steve Yzerman recently admitted that the team needs significant improvement after a frustrating 2025-26 campaign. Speaking for the first time since their campaign ended, Yzerman did not hold back, emphasizing that the team must upgrade its roster to compete at a higher level moving forward.

His blunt assessment comes after Detroit missed the playoffs once again this season. The Red Wings, unfortunately, had to exit with 41 wins, 31 losses, securing 92 points. The team’s Atlantic Division rank is 6th, and Eastern Conference rank is 10th, this season.

The Detroit Red Wings were playing very well at one point in the season. They were even competing for first place in their division and looked almost certain to qualify for the playoffs after many years. They were far ahead (by 34 points) of the Ottawa Senators, so it seemed impossible for Ottawa to catch them. But later, Ottawa started winning a lot of games, and Detroit's performance dropped.

The Detroit Red Wings general manager, Steve Yzerman, delivered a blunt assessment after a disappointing 2025–26 campaign. He seeks to upgrade the roster after a frustrating season and stated that the team needs better players after another NHL playoff miss.

During an end-of-season press conference, general manager Steve Yzerman revealed that owner of the team is frustrated with how the season ended. However, he is still backing the front office in hopes of returning back strong in the right direction.

Speaking during the media interaction, he stated, “I spoke with [CEO Chris Ilitch] a few days ago. He and the entire ownership, the Ilitch family, are very disappointed with the way the season played out. He continues to be extremely supportive of what we’re trying to do here. We intend to have further conversations about our team and about our organization in the very near future.”


Steve Yzerman also revealed that even when the Detroit Red Wings were doing well in the standings, he and the coaching staff were not fully convinced the team was actually that strong.

“Truthfully, throughout the course of the season…we had concerns. Todd and I talked about it…we, as a staff. We’re winning games. We see the deficiencies, the areas that we need to improve upon – that probably goes for every team. You’re never totally comfortable, regardless of where you are. … We were third overall or something, and we’re like, ‘Let’s be realistic. I don’t think we’re as good as our record at the time, but we are winning games,” he added. (source: Daily Faceoff)

When asked about if the team needs to go through a major transformation in this offseason, he added, “I think everything has to be assessed, you know, how we do things, for sure. I’d be ignorant to not really have a really in-depth look at our team, at our organization, for sure. Do we need major shakeups? Maybe, maybe not.”

He further stated that, “Most obviously, we need better players…It’s incumbent on me and my staff to improve this team.”

Reportedly, team owner Chris Ilitch is disappointed with the outcome but continues to support the organization’s long-term direction, and despite the pressure, Yzerman assured that he will work towards rebuilding and improving the roster ahead of the 2026–27 season.
