Auston Matthews and William Nylander are experiencing the complete Olympic experience in Milan. The Toronto Maple Leafs stars and Oliver Ekman-Larsson will stay at the athletes' village during the 2026 Winter Games instead of using high-end hotel accommodations.
The Olympic Village served as the chosen location for both Team USA and Team Sweden because they wanted to experience complete Olympic competition with their teammates instead of separate spaces. The event now has an international tournament atmosphere from the past because NHL players will participate in the Games again this year.
What did Auston Matthews say about sharing a room with Dylan Larkin?
Matthews shares his room with Dylan Larkin, who serves as captain of the Detroit Red Wings and now leads Team USA. Matthews described his encounters with reporters, which included his interaction with TSN reporter Mark Masters, as a "pretty neat" experience because of his connection with Larkin, who has been his friend for many years. Matthews recognized their limited living space, yet he demonstrated that their shared time between meals and free periods at work created distinct team experiences.
Matthews played center on a line with Jake Guentzel and Matt Boldy during Team USA practice in Milan.
The Americans start their first tournament match on Thursday against Latvia.
Nylander and Ekman-Larsson from Team Sweden will continue their stay at the village despite their active participation in the Team Sweden activities. Victor Hedman, who serves as assistant captain, has confirmed his shared accommodations with Erik Karlsson while they maintain a dorm-style arrangement, which results in their combined age reaching 70 years. Hedman explained that “I don’t think I’ve had a roommate for over 12 years in the NHL…Combined 70 years old in there. We pretty much grew up together on the national team stage. I first got to know him when I was maybe 13 or 14, and now we’re 35 and living together once again in a dorm.”
Wednesday marks the start of Sweden's tournament, which will see Nylander take on an essential role in the team's scoring efforts.
By choosing to stay in the athletes' village, Auston Matthews, William Nylander, and Oliver Ekman-Larsson experience the complete Olympic experience in Milan. The tournament experience becomes more intense for them because they will live with both their teammates and other athletes who are competing. The ice now becomes the battleground as Team USA and Team Sweden start their quest for Olympic gold.
