The Vegas Golden Knights defeated the Toronto Maple Leafs 6-3, but the spotlight focused more on Marner’s return. It was his first appearance in Toronto since he left the franchise last summer to join Vegas.Mitch Marner has spent nearly nine seasons with the Maple Leafs and established himself as one of the franchise's most productive players. As Mitch Marner returned to the team on Saturday, he was welcomed with a warm tribute video, celebrating nine seasons of brilliance, frustration, and loyalty intertwined. However, this did not sit well with the fans, and he was welcomed with taunts and jeers from the crowd. Despite that, Marner skated to center ice, lifted his hand, tapped his chest, and paused.
Teammates from both benches tapped their sticks, acknowledging the moment.Speaking after the game, Marner admitted the night felt strange from the opening faceoff. He said walking into the visitors’ locker room took some getting used to. He stated, "It was a little odd at first, to be honest. I mean, just walking the other side, like I talked about this morning. You know, a passionate fan base here, they love their team. So, it was interesting the whole night, and I really appreciate the love and support throughout the tribute video and, yeah, so got a lot of love for these fans."
He also acknowledged the tribute video that rolled after he stepped out to play against the Leafs. The former Maple Leafs star stated, "I was trying to just take it in and not get emotional and try to remember we're still in a hockey game, and we're playing hockey."Marner further added while he was praising and acknowledging Joe Bowen’s contribution, too. "I was trying to give a point there to Bonesy. He's meant a lot to this nation through his time. I didn't get to say it this morning. Just listening to his calls and being a part of his calls is a special feeling, what a legend. So I tried to give him a quick hand up there, but I don't know if he saw it or not.
