Leon Draisaitl named captain of Team Germany for 2026 Winter Olympics

The 2026 Olympic Winter Games Milano Cortina will see Team Germany compete under Leon Draisaitl, Moritz Seider, and Tim Stützle's leadership, with Draisaitl serving as captain, who was appointed on Monday. The Edmonton Oilers superstar has built his legacy as the most successful German-born player in NHL history, and he will now showcase his leadership abilities during the Olympic competition.

Draisaitl received the honor because of his offensive contributions and his role as a team member. At 30, he remains one of the NHL’s elite forwards and a driving force for Edmonton. The German team needs its athletes to stay calm during matches while showing offensive power throughout their upcoming Group C contests, which begin with their match against Denmark.

Why Leon Draisaitl is perfect captain for Team Germany

Draisaitl holds the record as Germany's top all-time NHL scorer, who achieved 1,036 points through 428 goals and 608 assists across 845 games. This season, he ranks among the League’s top scorers with 80 points (29 goals, 51 assists) in 55 games. His playoff achievements are equally impressive because he scored 141 points during 96 postseason games while helping the Oilers achieve consecutive Stanley Cup Finals appearances.
The 2019-20 season established his status as one of the best European players in NHL history because he won the Art Ross Trophy, Hart Trophy, and Ted Lindsay Award.

Philipp Grubauer, who plays goal for Germany hockey team, expressed his approval of the decision because he considered it a "huge honor" while describing Draisaitl as "a great leader" who has made "amazing" contributions to Edmonton during his whole time there.
Moritz Seider from the Detroit Red Wings and Tim Stützle, an Ottawa Senators forward, received the title of alternate captain. Seider, who won the 2021-22 Calder Trophy, called Draisaitl “a top-five player in the world right now” because his meticulousness and puck control abilities represented the benchmark for younger players to achieve.

Stützle described Draisaitl as “a huge role model” who creates an impact in Germany and throughout the NHL. He explained, "I think there’s a lot of great leaders in the room as well, and everybody is going to help him out, but he’s a great leader himself. It’ll be awesome to see him and see him play his game.”

Draisaitl leads Germany as their captain during the 2026 Olympics, which provides the country with established star power and leadership abilities. The team will depend on its captain to guide them through the international competition because they have upcoming players who include Seider and Stützle.
