NHL Player Update: Keifer Sherwood to make a debut with the San Jose Sharks against the Colorado Avalanche

Keifer Sherwood is all set to make his debut with the San Jose Sharks on Wednesday, as the team locks horns with the Colorado Avalanche. As per reports, the player was on injured reserve with an upper-body issue, but was a full participant in the Sharks’ 45-minute practice in Chicago on Tuesday. He was sidelined for a month.

According to Mercury, he skated on the team’s top line alongside Macklin Celebrini and Will Smith. In this season, Sherwood has 17 goals and 23 points in 44 outings in 2025-26. Meanwhile, he would join the lineup with Macklin Celebrini and Will Smith. The player who was on injured reserve is signed to a 2-year, $3 million contract with a cap hit of $1.5 million per season, playing for the San Jose Sharks.

The San Jose Sharks have activated Keifer Sherwood off waivers, and the star forward is all set to play against Colorado on Wednesday, as reported by Curtis Pashelka of The San Jose Mercury News. Earlier, he was sidelined for about a month due to an undisclosed injury. After staying away from the team for nearly a month, Sherwood declined to specify the exact nature of the injury, saying he was preparing for his return.

Recently, the San Jose Sharks star shared on Hockey Digest, “It was good. It’s an exciting, fun group, and just trying to be a part of it and get acclimated. Have a good practice. Just take it day by day. Try to get the body and the mind better each day, and just prepare. You always prepare like you’re gonna play.” (source: Yahoo Sports)


It is important to note that Sherwood was acquired from the Vancouver Canucks on Jan. 19, but has been kept away from the team since Jan. 10 due to an upper-body injury. Before joining the Sharks, Sherwood was leading the Canucks in goals, scoring 17 goals and six assists for 23 points in 44 games. He was indeed one of Vancouver’s most productive forwards before the trade and injury.

The 30-year-old forward was acquired in exchange for defenseman Cole Clayton and second-round draft picks in both 2026 and 2027. According to reports, he was in the final year of his two-year, $3 million contract and was set to become an unrestricted free agent this summer. His return would surely boost the San Jose Sharks’ strength as the team sits sixth in the Pacific Division at 27-23-4.
