Penguins pay emotional tribute to Late GM Ray Shero

Before their match versus Boston Bruins on Sunday the Pittsburgh Penguins dedicated a sentimental video to pay tribute to their late general manager Ray Shero. He passed away last week at 62, was remembered for his pivotal role in shaping the franchise’s success.

Between 2006 and 2014 Shero guided the Penguins as their general manager during which the team won the Stanley Cup in 2009. The Pittsburgh franchise continued being competitive yearly as Shero led them to playoff competitions in all seasons under his management. Shero received the 2013 Jim Gregory Award because of his achievements in leading the NHL while acting as GM.

A celebration of life rather than a moment of silence

The team organized public applause instead of silence to honor Shero as he had lived his life. The players combined their hockey custom by striking their sticks on the ice to express a unified recognition. A special video showcased both the career achievements and the memorable 2009 Cup victory from Shero's tenure in hockey.

Special gestures across the league show widespread respect

The Penguins together with the Bruins displayed hockey helmet decals as tribute to Shero. The Penguins displayed the helmet decals before their game against the New Jersey Devils which Shero managed between 2015 until 2020.

A hockey life dedicated to the game

During his career Shero fulfilled various administrative positions in professional hockey as he moved from the Pittsburgh franchise to the Ottawa Senators. He also moved to Nashville Predators before becoming a current advisor to Minnesota Wild GM Bill Guerin. His organizational reach extended throughout the entire league creating a permanent impact on professional athletics.

Several present-day Pittsburgh Penguins place profound appreciation on Shero for contributing to their professional advancement and the achievement of success. His influence went beyond just roster decisions, fostering a winning culture that inspired players to reach their full potential.
