Rasmus Dahlin experienced a night he will never forget, one that balanced triumph with profound personal emotion. On Tuesday, the Buffalo Sabres captain recorded his first career hat trick, equalling his NHL career high with five points in a thrilling 7-4 win against the Toronto Maple Leafs. Yet behind the celebration was a deeply moving story of loss and resilience that has defined the past six months of his life.
The journey to this milestone has been far from smooth. Last summer, Dahlin and his fiancee, Carolina Matovac, endured unimaginable hardships. While on vacation in France, Matovac fell gravely ill, requiring weeks on life support and eventually a heart transplant. During this period, the couple also lost their unborn child, a heartbreak that has lingered even as Dahlin continues to excel on the ice.

In the postgame media session, Dahlin’s emotions were evident. “It’s been a crazy year. And I’m just so happy I can be with this team,” he said, pausing to gather himself. Dahlin credited his teammates for their support, noting, “My brothers, they help me every day. I could not have done this without them.”
Matovac’s Instagram post, shared just a day before the game, offered a heartfelt tribute to the child they lost, emphasizing the life-saving role the unborn baby played in Matovac’s recovery. “Though you didn't get to experience this world, you played a vital role in ensuring that I could continue to be a part of it,” she wrote. Her words show how the couple is still healing, both as individuals and together.
On the ice, Dahlin’s play is more than skill, it shows his character. His teammate Tage Thompson said his dedication and leadership inspire the whole team. Buffalo’s recent surge, going 19-3-1 in their last 23 games, positions them third in the Atlantic Division with 65 points, their best playoff push in 15 years.
Coach Lindy Ruff highlighted the balance Dahlin maintains between family and hockey. “I think he understands that every time he’s needed time, we’ve said family comes first. I think he really respects that part of it. He knows that hockey is second and family is first. And you know, that’s the way life should be approached,” Ruff said. As Dahlin continues to shine on the ice, he and Carolina remain focused on embracing life and cherishing every moment, a sentiment mirrored in the joy and determination he brings to the game.
