Tampa Bay Lightning make NHL history with 6-5 comeback shootout win from four goals over Boston Bruins
The Tampa Bay Lightning made one of the most incredible comebacks in NHL history, coming from behind with four goals to defeat the Boston Bruins 6-5 in a shootout win at the 2026 Navy Federal Credit Union Stadium Series on Sunday night. The Lightning made their first outdoor game in franchise history an instant classic in front of a record-breaking crowd at Raymond James Stadium.
Trailing 5-1 in the second period, the Lightning seemed destined for a blowout loss. But fueled by Nikita Kucherov’s four-point game and a blistering power play, Tampa Bay scored four consecutive goals to force overtime and win the game in a shootout. The Lightning’s victory is the biggest comeback in NHL outdoor game history and the first time the team has overcome a four-goal deficit to win a game.
The Lightning scored two goals in the span of 23 seconds on a 5-on-3 power play as Darren Raddysh and Nick Paul scored to suddenly cut the lead down to just one goal. The Lightning’s quick goals rattled the Bruins, who were unable to compose themselves as penalties continued to add up.
In the third period, Kucherov finished the comeback by blasting a one-timer from the right circle to tie the game at 5-5. Kucherov’s goal finished off a magical night in which he scored one goal and had three assists, controlling almost every aspect of the pivotal plays on the Tampa Bay side.
While both teams had their chances throughout the night, the overtime portion of the game was a disappointment, setting up an electrifying shootout. Jake Guentzel, who finished the night with one goal and two assists, was the only player to score in the shootout, as Andrei Vasilevskiy shut the door to finish off the comeback. The Bruins took 11 penalties and allowed three power-play goals, a combination that ultimately led to their defeat.
