Team Canada’s Connor McDavid sets new Olympic scoring record with 12 points at Milano Cortina 2026
Connor McDavid has set history and carved his name into glory at Milano Cortina 2026, scoring a new record for most points by a player in a single Olympic men’s hockey tournament featuring NHL competitors. As per reports, he has recorded the most points in a single Olympic tournament involving NHL players with his 12th of the Milan Cortina Games during Canada’s semifinal against Finland.
According to TSN.com, the Edmonton Oilers star entered the semifinal tied with Teemu Selanne and Saku Koivu for the record for points in a single Olympics involving NHL players with 11, and his nine assists entering the game were already an Olympic record.
Besides, it is important to note that Edmonton Oilers captain Connor McDavid has assumed the captaincy for Team Canada in Friday's Olympic semifinal against Finland following Sidney Crosby's absence due to injury. The NHL star will serve as the captain at Santagiulia Arena, with Cale Makar and Nathan MacKinnon serving as alternate captains.
Connor McDavid created history on Friday at the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics, establishing a new record for most points by a player in a single Olympic men’s hockey tournament. As reported by TSN, McDavid could make it possible with his secondary assist on Sam Reinhart’s power-play goal against Finland in Friday’s semifinal. McDavid recorded his record-setting 12th point at the Winter Olympics as Reinhart’s goal cut Canada’s deficit to 2-1 in the second period.
Apart from his performance in the semifinal, McDavid also assisted on Canada's first two goals in a 4-3 overtime win against Czechia. It was his first game of the tournament in which he had fewer than three points in a game.
It is to be noted that the Edmonton Oilers centre has already won gold medals with Canada at the World Junior Hockey Championships, IIHF World Championship, and at last at the 4 Nations Face-Off, in which he scored the tournament-winning goal in overtime against the United States.
In addition to this, this semifinal is more special to him, as McDavid is serving as the captain of the team in the absence of Sidney Crosby, who was ruled out on Friday before the semifinal match against Finland. Earlier, the player sustained a lower-body injury during the quarterfinal win over Czechia, but he remains in contention for the upcoming Olympic semifinals.
The player was injured five minutes into the second period after his right leg bent in an awkward direction after taking a hit from Czech defenceman Radko Gudas during the match. Further, Canada is busy playing against Finland in the semifinal round, with a medal game, either gold or bronze, depending on the outcome.
