As the Toronto Maple Leafs are all set to undergo a major front-office transformation, they have finally decided to hire franchise icon Mats Sundin and John Chayka for a potential leadership role in their front office to revive the struggling organization. The Toronto Maple Leafs announced their new hockey leadership on Sunday afternoon, with a media conference scheduled for Monday at 1 p.m. ET.
According to reports, Mats Sundin will return to the organization as Senior Executive Advisor, Hockey Operations, and John Chayka is the new general manager. The team has primarily hired the duo to restore the team's pride and guide the organization into a new era.
It is to be noted that Sundin is a Swedish former professional ice hockey center widely regarded as one of the greatest Toronto Maple Leafs players in history. He was once the first European to be drafted first overall in the
NHL (1989) and played 18 seasons, mainly for the Quebec Nordiques and Toronto.
Toronto Maple Leafs appoint Mats Sundin and John Chayka to usher in a new era
The Toronto Maple Leafs have officially declared that they will appoint Mats Sundin and John Chayka to usher in a new era. The Toronto Maple Leafs are looking to reconnect with their identity, and Mats Sundin could be central to that plan, according to NHL analyst and insider Elliotte Friedman. The decision actually came after the Maple Leafs had a disappointing run this season and could not qualify for the NHL playoffs.
Earlier, the Toronto Maple Leafs fired general manager Brad Treliving, following a disappointing season and an analysis by the Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment (MLSE) and the team's top-tier management.

John Chayka has also confirmed the appointment, stating, “I’m honoured to join the Toronto Maple Leafs organization and excited to work alongside Mats and the entire organization. He further added in his statement that he looks forward to building a team that is competitive, driven, and relentless.
Again, Mats Sundin said, I am grateful for the opportunity to help this team, organization, and city achieve that. Sundin also further added, “My love for the Maple Leafs and the City of Toronto is an important part of who I am and who I will always be.” He also looks forward to working closely with John as they both recognize the incredible opportunity and responsibility to win here in Toronto.
