Google is planning to launch its own Android Wear-based smartwatches: Report

Search giant Google seems to be planning an aggressive push on hardware front. Few days back there were rumors that the technology giant may launch Google-branded smartphone. Now a report in Android Police, citing unnamed sources, claims that the company may be working on two new Android Wear watches with Google Assistant integration.

These Android Wear smartwatches are expected to come with Nexus branding. According to the report, "One watch will be larger, sportier, and more fully-featured (LTE, GPS, heart rate), the other will be smaller and lack the aforementioned mobile data and GPS."


The larger watch is likely to be called Angelfish and is expected to sport 43.5mm diameter and three buttons. The smaller watch is said to be called Swordfish and sport a diameter of 42mm.

According to the report, the company is also said to be working on new watch faces, apps and other controls. It is not clear when Google plans to launch these watches.

So far, Google's Android Wear operating system powers smartwatches from manufacturers like Samsung, Sony and Huawei.


At this year's I/O, Google announced a major update to its Android Wear platform. The biggest feature of Android Wear 2.0 is support for standalone apps. The update also adds keyboard and hand-writing recognition, along with general interface overhaul.

Android Wear is a version of the company's Android operating system designed for smartwatches and other wearables. Google launched the platform in March 2014.
