Activision has officially announced Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4. The upcoming game, which will bring the next chapter in the Modern Warfare series to current-generation consoles, PC and Nintendo’s latest platform, is set to launch on October 23. The game is being developed by Infinity Ward and published by Activision. It will be available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC and Nintendo Switch 2, while support for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One has been dropped.
In a blog post announcing the title, Activision said,
“This is Warfare Without Limits: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 releases on Friday, October 23, 2026, on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2. From Activision and Infinity Ward.”Call of Duty Modern Warfare 4 to launch in October: Story, gameplay and other details we know so far
Modern Warfare 4's campaign is set on the Korean Peninsula. The game’s developer has confirmed that the game’s story will revolve around North Korea invading in full force and a larger international conflict ensuing. Players assume the role of Private Park, a South Korean soldier on the front lines, while the returning character, Captain Price, is on a separate mission related to the ongoing crisis.
According to Activision, the campaign will take players across several locations, including Korea, New York, Paris, and Mumbai, and will feature a mix of large-scale warfare and covert operations. The multiplayer mode will launch with 12 core maps, alongside dedicated Gunfight maps and larger battlefields built for infantry and vehicle combat.
One of the newly announced additions is Kill Block, a map set in a military training facility whose layout changes between rounds. Activision says the map can generate more than 500 different configurations, creating different routes and sightlines in each match.
The game will also introduce Ballistic Authority, a new system designed to improve aiming, weapon handling, visibility and combat feedback. Activision says bloom has been removed from hip-fire shooting, while recoil and weapon behaviour have been rebuilt to better reflect player input.
Activision has confirmed the return of DMZ, the extraction-based mode in which players enter a combat zone to complete objectives, gather resources, and extract successfully. The mode will feature dynamic weather conditions, shifting objectives and AI-controlled hostile forces. The publisher said more information about DMZ will be shared on June 7.
The company also confirmed that content and progression from Modern Warfare 4 will be integrated into Call of Duty: Warzone beginning with Season 1. At the same time, Warzone support for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One will end when the new season launches.
Pre-orders for Modern Warfare 4 are already live on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC, while pre-orders for Nintendo Switch 2 are expected to open later this year.
