CD Projekt Red has confirmed that The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is set to receive a third expansion titled Songs of the Past. The expansion is set to release in 2027 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. The upcoming expansion will bring players back to the role of Geralt of Rivia for a new storyline more than a decade after the original game launched in 2015. The announcement ends months of speculation around a potential new expansion for The Witcher 3. CD Projekt Red said the DLC is being co-developed with Fool’s Theory, a studio that includes developers who previously worked on The Witcher 3.
In a blog post, the studio behind The Witcher franchise wrote:
“Medallion's humming, which can only mean one thing. It's time to announce we're working on a brand new expansion for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. Get ready to return to the Path with Geralt of Rivia in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt—Songs of the Past, coming in 2027.”Witcher 3 Wild Hunt Songs of the Past expansion: Geralt of Rivia returns in a new story
According to CD Projekt Red, Songs of the Past will once again put players in control of Geralt of Rivia, the monster hunter central to The Witcher 3. Specific details about the storyline, map, gameplay mechanics, or expansion size have not yet been disclosed. However, the company noted that more information about the expansion will be shared in late summer 2026.
The announcement appears to have happened earlier than planned, with some users reportedly seeing it on the RED Launcher before the official unveiling. Addressing the situation, CD Projekt Red said,
“We originally planned to make this big reveal during our REDstreams tomorrow, but let's say we found something we didn't yet expect on RED Launcher.”Following the leak, the announcement spread online before the scheduled reveal. The company added,
“We’re currently co-developing the expansion with Fool’s Theory and we’ll share more in late summer, so stay tuned.”Alongside the expansion announcement, CD Projekt Red said it intends to update system requirements for The Witcher 3 to support Songs of the Past and maintain compatibility with future updates.
“These requirements will become effective starting from the next update,” the company wrote.
Released in 2015, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt has sold over 60 million copies worldwide. The game follows Geralt of Rivia as he searches for his adopted daughter, Ciri, while navigating a dark fantasy world filled with political conflicts and monsters.
