Microsoft has confirmed that it's working on changes to Windows 11 that could allow users to customise the operating system's right-click context menu. According to an executive of the software giant, the planned update is expected to simplify the menu and give users greater control over the options that appear when they right-click on files and folders.
Responding to a user complaint about the length and complexity of Windows 11's context menu on microblogging site X (formerly Twitter), Marcus Ash, VP of Design and Research for Windows and Devices, said that the company is
"working on making context menus faster, simpler by default, configurable to what you use most. More will be shared on our approach soon."Windows 11 to get a customisable right-click menu: What this means for users
The comments suggest Microsoft is looking at both performance improvements and customisation options for one of the most frequently used interface elements in Windows 11. While the company has not shared specific details, the reference to the menu being
"configurable" has led to speculation that users may be able to decide which shortcuts and actions appear in the context menu.
The current Windows 11 right-click menu has faced criticism from some users since its introduction, with complaints about the need to access additional options via the
"Show more options" menu and the growing number of entries displayed by installed applications.
Microsoft has not yet explained how context menu customisation will work or how much control users will have over the feature. It also remains unclear whether certain system functions will remain permanently visible regardless of user preferences.
Ash's comments come as Microsoft continues to make broader changes to the Windows 11 interface. The company has already announced updates to the Start menu that will offer additional customisation options and has been working to modernise older parts of the operating system.
The planned changes to the context menu are part of Microsoft's ongoing efforts to refine the Windows 11 user experience and address user feedback on usability and interface design.
For now, Microsoft has not provided a release timeline for the feature, but Ash indicated that further details about the company's plans will be shared in the near future.
