Central Public Works Department

The Central Public Works Department (CPWD) of India was set up primarily in July 1854 as the Ajmer Provisional Division, with an objective to execute public works, including disciplines including 'architecture, engineering, project management coupled with comprehensive experience in building construction and maintenance'. Now, under Ministry of Urban Development, CPWD has a county wide presence. Director General Abhai Sinha heads the department and also acts as a Principal Technical Advisor to the government of India.

The department is the prime engineering bloc of Union government with three divisions- Buildings and Roads (B&R), Electrical and Mechanical (E&M), and Horticulture. Further it has three small specialised groups -- Central Architecture Service (CAS), Central Engineering Service (CES) and Central Electrical and Mechanical Engineering Service (CEMES) to provide construction management throughout any project.

In 2016, CPWD adopted modern dust-free construction method - monolithic system - for all projects budgeted more than Rs 100 crore. A monolithic system is one in which a concrete is pour for a beam and slab together to form one united construction component.
