Extortion is a criminal act of taking/collecting property, money or services from an institution or individual, primarily by force. It is sometimes in common language referred as a "protection racket" since the offenders often quote their demands a payment for "protection" from threats from unspecified other parties.
Extortion is commonly practiced by an organized criminal group. The actual obtainment of money or property is not required to commit the offense.

Under the Section 383 of the Indian Penal Court (IPC) any person who commits this crime is liable for imprisonment for a term as long as three years or fine or with both.

An example of this is the arrest of Iqbal Kaskar, brother of the deadly criminal Dawood Ibrahim. He was running his bother’s real estate business in Mumbai and was arrested by the Thane police for an extortion case.
