A nuclear weapon is an explosive device with a capability to release huge amount of devastating energy. Its significance may best be appreciated by the coining of the words kiloton (1,000 tons) and megaton (1,000,000 tons) to describe their blast energy in equivalent weights of the conventional chemical explosive TNT. One nuclear blast can destroy a whole city, potentially killing millions, and jeopardizing the natural environment and lives of future generations through its long-term catastrophic effects.
The best example of the destruction caused by a nuclear bomb is the Hiroshima and Nagasaki attack in World War II.
In 1946, first resolution was adopted by the UN General Assembly to deal with the problems related to the discovery of atomic energy and usage of nuclear weapons.
A number of multilateral treaties have since been established with the aim of preventing nuclear proliferation and testing, while promoting progress in nuclear disarmament.
The only countries known to have detonated nuclear weapons—and acknowledge possessing them—are the United States, the Soviet Union, the United Kingdom, France, China, India, Pakistan, and North Korea.

Israel is believed to possess nuclear weapons, though, in a policy of deliberate ambiguity, it does not acknowledge having them.
Germany, Italy, Turkey, Belgium and the Netherlands are nuclear weapons sharing states. South Africa is the only country to have independently developed and then renounced and dismantled its nuclear weapons.
