Assam is one of the seven sister states of India and an enigmatic one at that. It is famous for the Kamakhya Devi Temple, Kaziranga National Park, and exotic tea gardens and nature reserves. Yet, the true tourism potential of Assam has not been tapped till date.
Now, according to reports, Assam government has sanctioned INR 300 crore to Assam Tourism in order to promote the state as a world-class tourist destination. Sarbananda Sonowal, Chief Minister of Assam, tweeted recently to announce its decision and also revealed that the government is brainstorming to host Filmfare Awards in Guwahati for the first time.
Assam is located towards the south of the eastern Himalayas along the Barak River and Brahmaputra River Valleys. It hosts the famous Ambubachi Mela every year around June in honour of the menstruating Divine Mother Kamakhya Devi. Kalika Purana, one of the well-known scriptures of the Shakta order, was written in Assam. It mentions that one of the demon kings of Assam, Narakasura, was killed by Lord Krishna about 5500 years ago.
This year, many parts of Assam were inundated in floods due to excessive rainfall. However, things seem to be getting better with passing days.
