Thean Hou Temple

A Magnificent Chinese temple
Noteworthy for: Thean Hou is a syncretic temple that incorporates elements of three belief systems: Buddhism, Taoism and Confucianism.

With its multi-arched gateways, pagoda rooftops, exquisite paintings, and dragon carvings, the ornate Thean Hou Temple is a feast for the eyes that will have your camera working overtime. One of the most visually striking temples in all of Malaysia, it is dedicated to Thean Hou, the Heavenly Mother. Inside, her statue sits between the Goddess of the Waterfront and the Goddess of Mercy.
Thean Hou was built by Chinese expatriates from Hainan and serves as a focal point for the community. Although a sanctuary of prayer and contemplation, this place of worship turns into celebration central on many occasions during the year with fireworks, processions, dragons, and lanterns. Traditional festivals such as Chinese New Year and Vesak are celebrated here, as well as birthday tributes to the three deities.
