Canterbury is not the most popular option when it comes to day trips from London but it is my favourite. This cathedral city is located amidst the lush English countryside. The entire city is pedestrianised, so make sure you opt for the park and ride service if you’re driving. It can be very hard to find parking once you reach Canterbury.
Canterbury Cathedral occupies pride of place here. It is King Henry IV’s burial site, the place when Thomas Becket was murdered in 1170, and most importantly, the subject of Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales. The building is a World Heritage Site and it is endlessly fascinating. Give yourself at least a couple of hours to pore over the architectural details—it is bound to leave you dumbfounded. Once you have explored the building to your heart’s content, take a river tour of idyllic Stour. The entertaining river tour showcases Canterbury’s history perfectly. It provides an apt introduction to the city’s vibrant and multi-faceted story.
