The fascinating Pamban Bridge, and the holy town of Rameshwaram

The Indian state of Tamil Nadu is known for a fascinating bridge called the Pamban Bridge. Its significance? It was built almost 100 years ago and is one of the most unique rail bridges in the country. It was once the longest sea-bridge in India, offering the ride of a lifetime to travellers. It was also once the only surface transport to connect Tamil Nadu’s Rameshwaram to the mainland.
All about the Pamban Bridge

The Pamban Bridge also has a road bridge that was constructed parallel to the original rail bridge back in 1988. It connects National Highway 49 with the island of Rameshwaram. You can take the Rameshwaram Express and the Chennai Express if you wish to pore over the wonder that this bridge is. It is built over the mighty Bay of Bengal; more accurately, it is built over the Palk Strait. The construction is also a very challenging one because it is built on the second most corrosive environment in the world, after Florida. It is also a place that is infamous for cyclones.

Rameshwaram is not only beautiful but also has a religious significance. Located close to Sri Lanka, it is known as the place where Lord Rama built a bridge to Sri Lanka in order to rescue Sita. It also is one of the Char Dhams associated with Lord Vishnu; hence you can well imagine the number of tourists it gets each year.
