Inspiring photos of Uttarakhand’s most treasured offbeat sites
Uttarakhand is a state like no other. Most parts of it sprawl in the Indian Himalayas, and the state is also famous by the name of Dev Bhoomi (the Land of Gods). If you have been to Uttarakhand and are searching for some of its most beautiful yet lesser talked about sites, these photos are the answer you're looking for.
Nothing less than inspiring, these places are some of Uttarakhand's most offbeat and well-kept secrets.
Munsiyari
Munsiyari is one of the most offbeat places in Uttarakhand, mostly because it is off the route and not the easiest place to reach. At 621 km from Delhi, with stretches of mountainous, winding roads, this place is a treasure waiting to be explored. Stunning vistas of the Himalayas and surreal experiences are guaranteed here.
Katarmal Sun Temple
Almora's Katarmal Sun Temple is one of the very few temples dedicated to the Sun in India. Yet, it is also one of the least talked about attractions in the state. It was constructed in the 9th century and is an architectural masterpiece. It is also tagged as a monument of national importance.
Bedni Bugyal
If you have been pining for uninterrupted views of Trishul and Nanda Ghunti, two of the highest peaks in India, this place is for you. Of course, it takes a strenous trek to reach here but the views and the magic of this meadows makes up for all the hard work. Trekkers to Roopkund Lake have to trek through the bugyal (meadow) to reach the lake.
Most of the trekking groups usually camp at the meadow for a night of the journey.
Harsil Valley
Harsil Valley is another untouched region in the state and is a delight to run off to every summer, when most of the India sees scorching summers. A solitude lover's getaway, Harsil is perfect for leisurely hikes, a writer's retreat, landscape photography and more. Of course, the apple produce here are one of the best in India.
Chaukori
Uttarakhand's spectacular Panchachuli peaks await you at Chaukori. Nanda Devi peak is of course the biggest attraction here; a sight that you can look at for hours. It lies in Uttarakhand's Chaukori district, and has Tibet to its north.
Jageshwar Temple
This cluster of 125 Hindu temples in the dense pine forests of Uttarkhand's Kumaon is a sight to behold and stays as one of the many treasured secrets of the place. The temples are built using stones and most of these follow the Nagara style of architecture. Deep inside the mountain forest, this place feels surreal.
Sitala
Sitala is a great escape for those keen on an offbeat escape to a remote hill station in the state. It lies around the more famous Mukteshwar, and sees plenty of snow during the winters here. It is also home to a number of heritage bungalows and ancient temples.
