A mirror into the history of Miyajima and the everyday lives of the residents of the island, the Miyajima History and Folklore Museum (Miyajima Rekishi Minzoku Shiryōkan) is a downright enlightening experience. An amalgamation of common equipment and materials used by the inhabitants of Miyajima and works of art associated with its temples, the museum has a plethora of extremely well-preserved objects under one roof. Ancient paintings, poetry and valuable documents that encapsulate the origins and culture of Miyajima are vital elements of the museum. The most notable of exhibits are related to Taira-no-Kiyomori who was the founder of the famed Itsukushima Shrine. The structure was initially the dwelling of the wealthy Egami family of the Edo period that owned a successful soya sauce business and even after some hundred years, their living quarters, replete with Japanese gardens and a storehouse, are beautifully maintained as a part of the facade of the museum.Opened in 1974, The Miyajima History and Folklore museum houses over a thousand exhibits that have been assembled only due to the collective efforts of the people of the island. Moreover, the museum complex itself is pleasing to look at with its striking wooden exterior and traditional interiors. The museum is therefore a major attraction on Miyajima for all the right reasons. Do not give this one a miss.
