Just 30 minutes away from Mysore, Srirangapatna is an island formed by the river Cauvery and was the capital of the father-son duo of Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan. Today, it is full of ruins of fortifications, palaces, tombs and temples. Srirangapatna is visible more as ruins, and within its premises is the famous Ranganathaswamy Temple. Also here is the mosque, the dungeon where prisoners were imprisoned and the spot where Tipu was killed. Further afield is Daria Daulat Bagh also known as Tipu’s summer palace built in Indo-Sarcenic style with beautiful decorations, wall panels, carved arches and exquisite frescoes. Near the palace is Gumbaz, a beautiful mausoleum comprising the tombs of Hyder, Tipu and some other members of the family. Other sights to see here include the Wellesley Bridge, a Catholic Church and a storeroom for gunpowder. The road ultimately leads to the river front shaded by trees and a nice place for a picnic.
