The Mezquita

If you have the leisure of time when you visit Granada, consider catching a train or bus to visit The Mezquita in Cordoba. The building is just two hours away from Granada. This mosque-turned-cathedral is one of the most unique buildings in the world. Its famous red and white arches—reminiscent of typical Islamic buildings—will hypnotise you into spending more time at the complex.
The mosque is a must-see on any visit to Andalucia. Despite its popularity, it is incredibly peaceful. This might have something to do with the spacious complex, which dates back to the tenth century. There are more than 850 pillars in the Mezquita. This makes for interesting patterns as the sun shines through its glass windows and collides with the light emitted by hundreds of oil lamps that are lit everyday at this cathedral. The Bell Tower, the elaborate entrance gates and patio add to the exotic intermingling of architectural styles. Cordoba’s Mezquita seems to belong in the Middle East, and yet here it is, in the Andalucian hinterland.
