Granada Charterhouse

One of the prime examples of Spanish Baroque architecture, Granada Charterhouse was constructed over a period of 300 years. It is a Carthusian monastery that is home to a community of monks. It gained fame because of its tabernacle, constructed according to a design by Francisco Hurtado Izquierdo. The structure might not be the most impressive from the outside but the sumptuous interior more than makes up for it. The walls are literally gilded with fine works of art and frescoes that are downright delightful.
Both the cathedral and the cloisters are worthy of a visit. Unfortunately, photography is not allowed in a number of areas in the complex. Granada Charterhouse’s tranquil setting and sylvan surroundings make the experience truly pleasurable. The monastery is just 20 minutes away from the city center and it’s easy to take a local bus or rent a scooter to reach the complex.
