Marvel at the architectural beauty of Borobudur Temple, world’s largest Buddhist temple

Central Java in Indonesia is home to the magnificent Borobudur Temple, a remarkable and iconic Buddhist monument. This ancient structure was built during the 8th and 9th century AD in the Kedu Valley. The Borobudur Temple complex became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1991.

The three tiers consist of a base, the middle terraces, and the upper platforms. If you look closely around the base of the temple complex, you will find bas reliefs depicting stories from everyday life, Buddhist teachings and Jataka Tales.



As you go to the middle terraces, you will find circular platforms adorned with more stupas. The upper platforms consist of a central dome surrounded by smaller stupas. Each level of the temple complex signifies a different stage on the path to enlightenment. Which is why the central dome represents Nirvana. The smaller stupas contain images of the Buddha.


It is said that the Borobudur Temple complex was a remarkable feat of engineering for its time. The temple was constructed using volcanic stone blocks without the use of any mortar, showcasing the excellent workmanship of the ancient Javanese artisans. The intricate carvings on the temple walls are pretty impressive too.

The Borobudur Temple lay hidden for a long time and was almost reclaimed by nature when locals informed Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles, the then British ruler of Java, about the existence of this ancient temple complex in 1814. Since this rediscovery, extensive restoration works took place, and what we have now is an impressive structure of cultural and historical significance.
