Dominating the skyline of old town Leipzig is the majestic and massive St Thomas Church in white, grey and deep brown. Going as far back as the 12th century, the church is nevertheless more famous as the place where Johann Sebastian Bach worked as the Kapellmeister (choirmaster) for over 25 years. And as a massive tribute, a huge area inside the church is marked off with a plaque and indicates where he is buried, while a towering statue stands just outside in the church square. The church is Gothic with beautiful statues, high vaulted ceilings and stained glass. It has two stunning organs and four bells, the largest of which goes back to the late 15th century and weighs an astounding 5200 kg. It is rung only on special occasions and has an incredible strike pitch. It also houses the lovely Thomas Boys Choir which performs among other things Bach’s motets and cantatas accompanied by the Gewandhaus Orchestra during weekends.Refrain from posting comments that are obscene, defamatory or inflammatory, and do not indulge in personal attacks, name calling or inciting hatred against any community.
