In Lipscani, there are also some Romanian Orthodox churches that escaped destruction, the most picturesque being the Stavropoleos Church. It is a small church with a lot of character; entering inside it feels like going back in time; besides, a dim light lighting the paintings creates a beautiful ambience. Stavropoleos Church is actually a monastery built in 1724 in Brâncovenesc style and is dedicated to St. Archangels Michael and Gabriel. The funds for its construction were curiously raised from the income of a close-by inn. Earthquakes and human decisions left nothing of the original monastery apart from the church itself.
