Often overlooked in favour of the more popular European capitals, Bucharest can actually be a surprisingly pleasant destination to visit. The capital city of Romania is probably more developed and modern than you would expect, but you will still be amazed by the poverty of some of its inhabitants that involuntarily become a part of this picturesque place. Old women begging for a piece of bread, gypsies selling their merchandise and monks asking for donations stand next to high-class managers, beautiful girls dressed up like models and luxurious shopping malls. Often overlooked in favour of the more popular European capitals, Bucharest can actually be a surprisingly pleasant destination to visit. The capital city of Romania is probably more developed and modern than you would expect, but you will still be amazed by the poverty of some of its inhabitants that involuntarily become a part of this picturesque place. Old women begging for a piece of bread, gypsies selling their merchandise and monks asking for donations stand next to high-class managers, beautiful girls dressed up like models and luxurious shopping malls. In the old city centre, you'll encounter a mix of Romanian Orthodox architecture, Art Nouveau buildings and Brâncovenesc style constructions. While the communist architecture of most the residential neighbourhood is not aesthetically appealing, it carries a great historical and sociological interest. In addition, Bucharest is also a city of dozens of parks that add colour to the concrete jungle. But maybe the main reason why Bucharest is appealing to more and more tourists is its cheap and fun nightlife. Irrespective of what actually attracts tourists to Romania's largest city and capital, there are a number of places to visit in Bucharest that will keep them occupied during their stay:
