What happened to Venice?

What happened to Venice?
As per recent reports, a number of smaller canals in Venice have run dry. Gone are the days of romantic and dreamy gondola rides in the watery streets of Venice. This is a bummer not only because of how this affects the tourism but also because in the street-less Venice, these waterways are the only means of transportation and commute.

The dry spell
This unfortunate dry spell, as per reports, is caused by a prolonged spell of low tides. Talks of the high-pressure weather conditions in parts of Italy have also surfaced in relation to this situation.
State of tourism
This situation has left several tourists and gondola operators frustrated. The gondola rides on the canals of Venice have been a major tourist attraction for a long time.
Local’s plight
For a larger part of the city, these canals also serve as streets. Meaning, in a street-less Venice, the locals use these daily for their daily commute as well as for their daily needs like shopping etc. Gondolas and vaporettos or water-buses take residents as well as tourists around the city.
Car-less Venice
There are no cars in Venice as there is no space for them in the city surrounded by water. The intricately interlinked canals are how the locals move around everyday.
What works in Venice right now?
Though the smaller canals in Venice are a dud right now, the main waterways including Grand and Giudecca canals are still in operation.
