What’s the ancient burial site of Kudakkallu Parambu all about?

Just when you thought Kerala couldn’t throw any more surprises your way, one shows up from the world of the dead. Hold the dramatic gasp right there; this is not about the supernatural. In fact, this is not even a surprise. It’s just that, exactly how many of us actually make plans to go visit ancient burial sites?

Answer is: not many of us.


Located in Chermanangad in Thrissur district, Kerala, Kudakkallu Parambu is a prehistoric megalithic burial site, with a total of 69 preserved megalith monuments. Like a majority of ancient monuments in India, this too has been through some rough treatments by people and nature. But as we say, it’s never too late, the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has declared it as a protected site. One can only hope that these survive (pun intended).


What is the Kudakkallu Parambu?
Literally, the term means ‘umbrella stones’. Kudakkallu Parambu is said to be more than 4000 years old. There is a good reason to believe that these monuments were once burial sites. You see, earlier, people used to bury their dead instead of burning as we see in present times. Most of the burial takes place with certain traditions and customs. Kudakkallu is one such that was prevalent in ancient Kerala.



These structures, resembling giant umbrellas, were used to cover the earthen urns where the dead were placed. There are different types of burials one can see here — Kudakkal (umbrella stone), Topikkal (hat stone), hood stones and stone circles.


The village of Chermanangad is no longer a small quiet village as it was many years ago. With urbanisation comes a lot of changes to the land, effects of which can also be seen in this ancient burial site.


One can only hope that a site such as this stays unharmed. They have been around for thousands of years, and such large structures were created out of megaliths. They are very much a part of the local culture and history.
