Spritzenhaus, meaning ‘fire station’ in German, plays up its name with long communal tables (shipped straight from Hamburg), a wood-burning brick oven, raw metal accents and an exposed sprinkler system. This massive 6,000-square-foot beer hall boasts more than 50 American and German craft beers, recession specials (beer and a shot for $6) and an extensive brat menu. From traditional German brats slathered in gourmet beer mustard to a more artisanal handmade venison version, there's an array of local specialties to try. There are also Belgian cut fries drenched in truffle oil and pretzels served with one of eight dipping sauces, from chipotle aioli to a blue cheese, bacon and walnut mayo topping. Sit at one of the sidewalk tables for alfresco drinking—with its proximity to McCarren Park—people watching is a must.
