Word to the wise: This is a colossal museum so if you want to see absolutely everything, plan your time well.

Commissioned by Franz Joseph, one of the last monarchs of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, the Kunsthistorisches Museum was built to house many of the artistic treasures amassed by the wealthy Habsburgs during the family’s long reign.
The building itself is massive, with a collection ranging from Egyptian, Greek and Roman to Austrian and the Baroque. The sheer number of canvasses on display should impress any admirer of fine art. Inside the galleries, you’ll come across works by Breughel, Caravaggio, Dürer, Rembrandt, Raffael, Rubens and Tizian. Temporary exhibitions held within the museum’s walls showcase pieces by different masters, giving patrons a good reason to return again and again.
