Chiang Mai Zoo & Aquarium

Lions, tigers and bears, oh my! Situated at the base of Doi Suthep Mountain, Chiang Mai Zoo & Aquarium is a must-see stop for all animal lovers visiting the ‘Rose of the North’, commonly known as Chiang Mai. The impressive 200-acre complex is known for its wildlife including the star of the show, a giant panda named Lin Hui. While the zoo is certainly something to see, it’s really the aquarium that takes centre stage with nearly 2,000 species of marine animals and a special snow dome that creates a welcome respite from Thailand tropical temperatures. Another highlight of the state of the art aquarium is the enormous walk-through glass tunnel that’s 133 m long. Here, you’ll spot an array of colourful coral reef on one side while the other boasts an underwater recreation of the Mekong River’s important ecosystem. Note that there’s not a one-size fits all entry ticket and if you just buy entry into the zoo you will need to pay additional fees to see the panda and aquarium. If you’re planning on exploring the entire complex, opt for the combined zoo and aquarium entrance ticket that also includes a minibus shuttle.
