Tickets for the air-conditioned Mumbai locals will soon be issued through a handheld wireless device. Through this technology, the Western Railways (WR) will issue tickets to only those who would be travelling in the first-class coaches of Mumbai’s AC local train, which runs between Churchgate and Virar.
Mumbai commuters can now hop into AC locals by just paying the fare difference
According to some railway officials, the trial for this upcoming ticketing process has already been started with the help of two devices, while four more of such devices are expected to be introduced soon.
Revealing more on this, a senior WR official said, “Commuters will also have the option of buying from ticket checkers, who can use their wireless devices for the same”.

Since this device is in its testing phase right now, it is issuing tickets at the price of regular Mumbai local train travel. But then, the passengers would be required to pay the fare difference to the ticket checker on board. Reportedly, more than 20 passengers have already paid the fare difference in this manner on the first day of the testing of this handheld device.
With local train travel in Mumbai getting better and better every day, we hope that the tourists visiting India’s commercial capital would soon be able to rely on this mode of travel as a convenient option in the city.
