Gdansk old town is a charming warren of cobbled streets and beautiful buildings. But all of it revolves around the Royal Route, considered to be among the longest such roads in Medieval Europe. The road is perfect for a stroll, beginning at Upland Gate and reaching all the way up to the Motlawa River, encompassing magnificent old buildings, ornate gates and lovely facades. Towards one end of the road is the forbidding Gothic and Renaissance prison and torture chamber. Opposite it lies the more pleasing and arresting 17th century Golden Gate, built in Renaissance style. It features the city’s emblem and is adorned with stone figures symbolising virtues like peace, justice, freedom, piety and reason, among others.
