From footballer Joyee to auto-rickshaw driver in Tumpa Autowali: Female characters on Bengali TV with offbeat career choices

Gone are the days when the women in TV shows are just confined to the four walls. Besides performing duties towards pati parmeshwar and family, they can run successful business, do a perfect summersault and bend it like Beckham too! Not just a hobby, but they are full time pursuing a successful career in an off-beat field. Keeping a sync with the realistic world, Bengali TV has also showcased some welcoming changes and the career choices made by the reel characters are among those. Rather than choosing conventional career paths, they are shining bright as a gymnast, cricketer or even an auto-rickshaw driver. ​Detective Parama

Who can forget Goyenda Ginni! She was one of the most favourite reel characters on Bengali TV. With intelligence and courage, protagonist Parama, who was otherwise a simple homemaker, used to crack critical cases. The show starred Indrani Halder in the titular role. Snehasish Chakraborty’s ‘Jagaddhatri’ is currently ruling the Bengali small screen. Keeping the ‘ronadhona’ aside, protagonist Jass chose to woo the audience with her intelligence and action-packed sequences as a special crime branch officer. She started driving the auto-rickshaw to help her family after her maternal uncle, who used to drive the vehicle, meets with an accident. Alta Phoring

Recently concluded TV show 'Alta Phoring' narrated the story of a mom and daughter duo. Mom Radharani was a promising athlete who left the profession after getting pregnant by her coach. She leaves the city and starts working as a daily wedge earner only to keep her daughter safe. Her daughter Phoring is also a talented gymnast. How Phoring pursues her goal and fulfils the dream of winning gold medal, formed the major crux of the story. The show was an instant hit Interestingly, Kheyali Mondal, who played Phoring's role is a gymnast in real-life. Bengali TV viewers simply fell in love with a bahu who can handle all the issues at home front, do a perfect summer sault and can win gold medal too. Meet Bengali TV’s cricketer Bahu Uma. Played by Shinjinee Chakraborty, who is now playing a shape-shifting serpent in ‘Ponchomi’, Umaa narrated the story of a young girl who dreamed to become a cricketer one day. Though the show later took different path and concentrated on Uma’s marital life and her struggle to defeat the antagonist rather than concentrating on 22 yards, ‘Uma’ managed to catch the attention for its topic.
