From Gouri Elo’s ‘famous’ Mona Lisa scene to ‘scrubber pad' disaster in Krishnakoli: Times when Bengali shows defied logic and became fodder for memes

Bengali daily soap ‘Gouri Elo’ is in the news but not for the right reasons it seems! A scene from yesterday’s (April 19) episode, in which village belle Gouri worships Mona Lisa’s famous painting as a goddess, has caught the attention of the viewers and eventually became fodder for trolls. Social media is filled with clippings and screenshots from the particular scene. This is not the first time a Bengali show is being trolled for its content. ‘Ke Apon Ke Por’, ‘Krishnakoli’, ‘Jamuna Dhaki’, and a few other TV shows were trolled in the past for their ideas of 'fantasy' in storytelling. Mona Lisa being worshipped as a goddess in 'Gouri Elo'

While the makers wanted to entertain the audience with a light hearted moment and prove the innocence of village belle Gouri, who is yet to adapt to the modern lifestyle, the comic timing seems to have gone all ‘wrong’. According to the story, village belle Gouri gets married to a doctor named Ishan. The innocent girl, who spent most of her life in a remote village, gets amused by the interior of Ishan’s room. She notices a number of photos and decorative items, including a replica of Mona Lisa's painting, in Ishan’s bedroom. Naïve Gouri thinks it is the photo of a goddess and wonders which avatar it is. Gouri, who is very pious, quickly brings a garland and incense sticks and offers puja. This particular scene from yesterday’s episode caught the attention of the viewers and the show was trolled on social media. Many viewers ‘failed’ to understand the logic behind the scene while some questioned the reason behind using Mona Lisa’s painting for this episode.

Ke Apon Ke Por's Joba on oxygen support while fighting a case in courtroom

Pallavi Sharma and Biswajit Ghosh starrer ‘Ke Apon Ke Por’ ran for three and a half years on Bengali TV and inspired many remakes in different languages including Hindi. But the show was trolled several times for different reasons. Right from how protagonist Joba became a lawyer and eventually a judge by only handling household chores and resolving disputes in her life, left the viewers shocked. Later, in a particular scene, Joba was caught fighting a case in the court while she was still breathing with the help of an oxygen cylinder and it raised many eyebrows. Joba’s talent to defuse a bomb barehanded as well as the logic of how her daughter Koel became a lawyer almost overnight, prompted many questions.

Protagonist Titli flying plane without formal training

While TV shows frequently enjoy the freedom of defying logic, Madhupriya Chowdhury and Aryann Bhowmik starrer ‘Titli’ took it to the next level. The show was targeted by trolls several times. A particular scene from the show, where protagonist Titli was seen flying a plane without having formal training, left the viewers completely shocked. According to the story, the pilot suffered a heart attack and Titli took the responsibility of saving the lives of the passengers. Needless to say, the show was heavily trolled on social media. The show was again trolled when Titli's plane crashed and she survived with minor scratches and loss of memory.

Protagonist Jamuna’s guitar skills

Rubel Das-Sweta Bhattacharya’s ‘Jamuna Dhaki’ is one of the popular shows on Bengali TV. The daily soap was trolled in the past for various reasons. In one particular scene, protagonist Jamuna, a professional Dhaki, was seen playing guitar. While her fingers hardly moved, the music that came out of the instrument, was perfect. The show was heavily trolled for this scene.

Bathroom scrubber pad used as a prop to show defibrillator in ‘Krishnakoli’

A serious scene from popular Bengali television serial ‘Krishnakoli’ became the fodder for trolls after netizens found an ‘uncanny resemblance’ between the automated external defibrillator shown in the scene and bathroom scrubber pad. The makers later accepted that they had used a bathroom scrubber pad as a prop to show it as the defibrillator which got noticed by the viewers. This particular scene from Neel Bhattacharya and Tiyasha Lepcha starrer went viral and inspired many social media enthusiasts to create memes and posts.
