Athar Siddiqui on Lakshmi Niwas: Negative characters leave a stronger impact on the audience
Athar Siddiqui, currently seen as Agnidev in Gatha Shiv Parivaar Ki Ganesh Kartikey, is set to return to the world of human drama with Lakshmi Niwas. In the show, he plays Gashmeer Mahajani’s brother-in-law and steps into the role of the antagonist.
Talking about his character, Athar says, “I am the antagonist. There are three families in the show Lakshmi’s, the politicians’, and ours. In our family, there is Gashmeer Mahajani, my wife, her mother, and me. I am the one who creates all the problems in the lead couple’s lives. Gashmeer is my brother-in-law, and I am a ghar jamai who is eyeing the property. I manipulate my wife and put her in front to extract money. It has been 12 days since the shoot began.”
The show was announced some time ago but faced delays due to the unavailability of a suitable time slot. With Lakshmi Niwas finally set to go on air from January 12 at 8 pm, Athar opens up about how such postponements affect actors. He says, “I was finalised for the show in August and have been waiting for it to hit the tube since then. Delays do create challenges. I was offered a couple of other shows, but the dates were clashing. Here, the shoot kept getting pushed, and I was repeatedly told it would start anytime. September stretched into December before the shoot finally commenced. That said, I am glad we are finally going on air.”
Although Athar has played both positive and negative roles over the years, he admits he is more inclined towards playing antagonists. Explaining why, he says, “I do get offers for positive roles as well, but most positive characters are not very impactful, especially in women-oriented shows. Ek positive character ke liye often the performance scope is limited and becomes repetitive. I prefer performance-oriented roles, which is why I gravitate towards negative characters. They leave a stronger impact on the audience. I enjoy playing layered or larger-than-life characters.”
