Exclusive - Archana Puran Singh on India's Laughter Champion, memes on her laughing style and more

Archana Puran Singh, who has now joined hands with Shekhar Suman to judge talent on comedy show 'India's Laughter Champion,' is enjoying her experience on the show. The seasoned actress recently spoke to ETimes TV and shared how she missed judging comic talent present in our country and she is excited being the old Archana Puran Singh. She also opened up about the memes and jokes that are usually made on her as a few people think that she laughs on every joke. Archana stated that she's an intelligent, educated person, who knows what humour is. Archana further recalled going through tough times in her personal life and still smiling on-camera as a professional. (Photo: Instagram)

I am missing the TKSS team a lot

Yes I am missing the The Kapil Sharma Show team a lot. In fact, I didn’t realise earlier that I would miss them so badly. The feeling of being on the same set but of another show, it’s exciting but there’s a little bit of nostalgia also that it is the same place where we used to shoot TKSS. The energy of the gang Krushna, Kapil, Kiku, they are all absolutely mind blowing so I am missing them a lot. In fact, I just messaged Kapil that I am coming to meet you guys. So I would go to meet them at their house in a day or two. (Photo: Instagram)

The freshness, newness of the talent, they are bringing on India's Laughter Champion is something else

I have started to realise that I miss being in that zone of comedy circus also. Because on The Kapil Sharma Show I was more of a silent spectator, laughing of course, but there was no judging involved, no giving marks. The talent there was amazing, they were all superstars. The freshness, newness of the talent, the material they are bringing on India's Laughter Champion is something else. Plus the excitement that we had done this kind of show a few years ago, but we have not done in the recent times so I’ve definitely enjoyed the turning back time. Becoming the same old Archana Puran Singh and judging the talent with Shekhar Suman is a huge amount of nostalgia. (Photo: Instagram)

We are getting to meet new people on India's Laughter Champion

There’s a lot of discovering of the kind of fun that Shekhar and I used to have with the contestants. Then we are also getting a chance to meet new people, who are not exposed to stardom, to the industry, there is a lot of innocence, enthusiasm and freshness, all that is coming with India's Laughter Champion. In Comedy Circus makers would use my laughter reactions to boost a poor punch

In Comedy Circus what was done was and it has impacted the kind of impression people have of me. Comedy Circus was the first show of that kind and it went on for the longest time, because comedy is very difficult to perform during a few of the episodes, some jokes were not received well as compared to how others were, so they would depend on my laughter. They would think that if we put Archana’s laughter on these jokes people would feel this is really funny. They would take my laughter reactions on some other jokes and use it for other poor gags or punches. They would use my laughter reactions to boost that punch. They did it for a very long time and I had in fact a very big issue with that production house and I had got very upset. I had communicated to them that they can’t do this and I would not laugh.(Photo: Instagram)

Archana: I agree I do have a loud laugh, but I don’t have an irrational, idiotic laugh

Maine keh diya tha main hasungi he nahi toh edit kaise Karoge… they did this for 4-6 months in the beginning and they reduced it later. But the result is people have only seen me laughing and the other judges who did not laugh, they didn’t use their reactions. They only put my cuts laughing loudly. I agree I do have a loud laugh, but I don’t have an irrational, idiotic laugh. I don’t laugh that much on silly jokes. I am an intelligent, educated person, who knows what humour is. Because of all this, the residual impact is that Archana laughs at anything. The fact is I laugh a lot and laugh very loudly that I absolutely accept, but I don't laugh at any jokes. As a professional it is my duty to boost a particular performer's act. (Photo: Instagram)

Archana - Keep making memes and jokes on me as I am making a lot of money due to all this

When the performers perform in front of me by putting in so much hard work and effort, is it fair on my part to just sit like a statue. Acche acche superstars feel nervous while performing in front of a live audience just think about them. I am required on the show to boost their confidence. In the west they also have live audiences and laughter tracks to boost the performers. With me what has happened now people have started making memes that I laugh a lot, I don’t have any problem with it, I say keep making memes and jokes on me because I am making a lot of money due to all this. I am a professional where we get praised and criticised also. There are people who enjoy my laughter and like me because I am a very Bindaas person. Now, it has become a perception about me. They say when you repeat a lie enough times it comes true. But if you see TKSS, you won’t find me laughing over silly jokes.(Photo: Instagram)

On keeping her grief aside and laughing: At the end of the day we are well paid, trained, disciplined artists

Comedy Circus went on for 10 years and in those times I have gone through some of the most difficult times. I got the news that my son was in England at that time and he had broken his leg while playing football. He was just 13 years old and he had to be flown down as the treatment there was not good enough, they were taking him to general hospital. He had to be flown down to India and I was shooting that day and I was so hassled. I was very worried because he was just 13 years old and had injured himself badly in a strange country. As a mother I would obviously not want to smile and laugh, but I had to laugh and smile while the contestants were performing. From inside I was crying but I could not show it on my face. At the end of the day we are well paid, compensated, trained, disciplined artists which is why we will give our best in spite of the given circumstances. (Photo: Instagram)

I was very close to my mother-in-law, I was on set, shooting when she passed away

I was very close to my mother-in-law, she was in the hospital and I reached the sets and half way through the episode I came to know that she had passed away. I got a call and I told the production house that I had to go. The production house asked me to give the reactions and go. The reactions were laughter and I gave general comments. I still can’t forget I was sitting there laughing and laughing and I was blank in the head. All I could think of was seeing my mother-in-law’s face. It was a traumatic time. (Photo: Instagram)

TKSS popularity is riding on talents like Krishna and Kiku who are generally brilliant in their comic timing. Kapil does not put effort like he did in his previous avataars like Comedy Nights with Kapil etc. APS is only incidental to the show maybe just a target of few gags from Kapil which are also often repetitive.
