Lock Upp: Domestic violence to extramarital affair; What went wrong in Nisha Rawal's marriage with Yeh Rishta actor Karan Mehra

In June last year, Nisha Rawal and Karan Mehra shocked their fans after coming out in the open about their troubled relationship. Serious accusations were made by the two against each other which left their friends, colleagues and followers shocked. Now that Nisha is seen in Lock Upp, she has been talking about her domestic issues yet again. Here's looking at what went wrong in her marriage with Karan Mehra.

Last year, Nisha filed a complaint against Karan after one of their domestic brawls. He allegedly pushed her against the wall and it led to her getting hurt on her head. Following this, she approached the police and an FIR was registered. In an exclusive interview to BT, Nisha had then said, "One of the charges filed by me against him is of domestic violence. I hadn’t spoken about it for so many years as I understand that for an actor his career and image are of utmost importance. In spite of being considerate and compassionate I have had to face something like this."

Nisha accused Karan of not just domestic abuse but also having an extramarital affair. She told BT, "I learnt about him being involved with another woman around a couple of months ago. I saw his text messages to the girl, I saw them for myself. Even after that, I sat him down and told him to talk about it. I have not behaved like a woman who will rip a man into pieces. I asked him if he didn’t want to continue then no problem."

Nisha apparently asked for exorbitant money as alimony from Karan. In the same interview, she said, "I told him that let’s settle it amicably and agree on an X amount. I made my resume, circulated it and started asking for a job since a month. I will do any work to support my child." In a press conference, her friend justified, "Nisha did not ask anything for herself from Karan. She only asked for her son’s alimony. She wanted him to just take care of the child’s education. She was looking for a job for the last few months and she was ready to work or even sweep the floor at McDonalds."

Talking about her financial crunch, Nisha had blamed Karan for transferring money from her account and selling her wedding jewellery. She said, "Over the years, Karan has been the financial head of our family and has taken control of everything, right from Kavish’s and my income that comes in from advertisements, etc. He has taken a lot of bills directly into his account. He would also transfer money from my account. I don’t even know what my loan account numbers, my property papers are because you trust your partner. I invested in a relationship with complete faith. I finally told him that you are having an affair, you are not happy with me, you don’t want to live with me, but now we have a child. If I wasn’t a mother, I would have walked out. But that’s not the case. I would have still walked out if he had left anything for me from my earnings. He has sold my wedding jewellery as well." (Photo: Instagram)

Karan rather shared his own side of the story amid all that came his way. He rather blamed Nisha for all the mess in their lives. He said, "Nisha has been behaving strangely since the past three years. It gets tough to deal with her because of her nature. In April, she told me that we should get separated. I finally relented. It was also becoming increasingly difficult to deal with her erratic behaviour." He also accused her of misbehaving with his parents and that’s when he called Nisha’s brother to mediate. The actor stated, "I told her that this is the amount I will be able to provide per month. Things kept going back and forth and I told her this is all I could afford. I explained to them that as a father, I would also like to do things for my son and would need money for myself as well, as I would be living separately. I can’t be on the road. You can’t make unreasonable demands while seeking a divorce. One has to understand how much the other person can afford to give as alimony."

In a press conference, Nisha bared her heart and admitted to suffering from bipolar disorder in 2014 and a miscarriage. She said, "I was diagnosed with bipolarity and I am not going to lie about it as I am not ashamed about it. But I am not a psycho, it is a mood disorder. And you all know how balanced I am. In September 2014, I was 5 months pregnant and I lost my child. Recently, I made a Mom’s group where women who lost their child could speak up about it as when I lost my child I did not have anyone to talk about the loss. I wanted to go to my parents and talk to them because it was a very big trauma for me. In the middle of it, my husband was beating me up, abusing me, he was unavailable, totally detached and that’s when I went to a therapist. In fact, Karan had stopped me from going to a therapist, he didn’t let me go to a gym, he was very controlling in everything. But I went to the therapist.
