Rupali Ganguly's old audition tape for Anupamaa goes viral; here’s how she bagged the lead role

Anupamaa, one of India's most popular television shows, recently made headlines following the departure of one of its key actors. The show, led by actress Rupali Ganguly, tells the story of a dedicated mother and wife who fights for her self-respect and the well-being of her family. Since its debut in 2020, Anupamaa has consistently ranked among the top TV shows. Before her role in Anupamaa, Rupali was known for her work in several notable television series, including Sarabhai Vs Sarabhai. Interestingly, Rupali had to audition for the lead role of Anupamaa, and an old video of her audition has recently resurfaced on social media.



In the viral clip, Rupali is seen wearing an orange saree, reminiscent of her character's attire in the show. Her performance in the audition was remarkably natural, providing a glimpse of the talent that has captivated audiences. In the audition video, Rupali is seen performing a scene that involves a serious conversation with her on-screen daughter.


The show's recent buzz also stems from the unexpected exit of actor Sudhanshu Pandey, who portrayed Rupali's ex-husband, Vanraj Shah. Alongside Rupali Ganguly, Anupamaa features a strong ensemble cast, including Madalsa Sharma, Apurva Agnihotri, Alpana Buch, Arvind Vaidya, Paras Kalnawat, Aashish Mehrotra, Muskan Bamne, Shekhar Shukla, Nidhi Shah, Anagha Bhosale, and Tassnim Sheikh.


In an appearance on The Ranveer Show podcast, Rupali shared insights into how she landed the role of Anupamaa. Reflecting on the audition process, she mentioned her initial doubts about being cast due to past interactions with the show's producer, Rajan Shahi. "I wasn’t sure if he’d cast me because I’d troubled him a lot on the first show. The first thing that he asked me was, ‘Have you grown up?’ And I said, ‘Yes, I have a child now’. And Rajan ji decided to cast me. I didn’t know the show was called Anupamaa until the trailer came in," Rupali recounted.


In addition to her acting career, Rupali Ganguly made news earlier this year by joining the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha Elections, where she expressed her support for Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
