Sumona Chakravarti battling endometriosis to Abhinav Shukla being borderline dyslexic; TV celebs who opened up about their serious medical conditions

It takes immense courage for a public figure to speak about his/her medical condition in the public domain. A lot is put at risk for them in terms of their career but there are a few actors, who do not consider their limitations to be a taboo and courageously opened up about their medical conditions and also shared how they are overcoming/overcame it. Let's take a look:

2/7

Abhinav Shukla

The Khatron Ke Khiladi 11 contestant and actor Abhinav Shukla recently opened up about him being borderline dyslexic. In an interview with BT, the actor opened up about it. He said, "I have saved my dad's name as Dad 24 July as I can't remember his birthday. Even today I get confused with English words like does-dose, weather-whether, etc. For the longest time, I thought this was normal. People would tell me that why do I keep forgetting the simplest details. So while doing my research work about dyslexia, I came to know that the borderline signs of the disorders were very much there in me. I didn't go for a medical diagnosis, rather I was able to do a self-diagnosis for myself." Abhinav shared that he is working upon his disorder with certain mind exercises.

Sumona Chakravarti

The Kapil Sharma Show fame Sumona Chakravarti opened up about battling a medical condition called endometriosis since 2011 and how the lockdown has been hard for her. In her social media post, the actress had written, "Something I've never shared before. I have been battling endometriosis since 2011. Been in stage IV for many years now. A good eating habit, exercise & most importantly no stress is key to my well being. The lockdown has been emotionally hard for me." A day later, Sumona took to her Instagram story to respond to those who reached out to her. She wrote, "The idea was to spread awareness about a health ailment #Endometriosis which is as common as PCOD/diabetes probably. Am glad a lot of young girls, women, doctors, husbands reaching out on behalf of their wives... have responded & realised how important it is to give it the medical attention it needs. As far as I'm concerned, I am doing okay. Been managing it medically for as long as i can remember. So thank you for all your duas & prayers. Peace & Love (sic)."

Sharad Kelkar

The versatile actor Sharad Kelkar with a voice that would soothe your mind also did not have it easy. The actor, in a recent podcast with Maniesh Paul, opened up about his stuttering issue and how he was replaced from a TV show because of his condition. Sharad said, "I used to stammer since I was a kid. We call our mothers ‘Aai’ in Marathi. I had a problem calling her ‘Aai’. I used to stammer. I used to feel pretty humiliated in front of my friends as well. They would say, ‘You’ll take two days to say it. Keep quiet’. I never could go on stage. I used to sing. But stuttering was a problem in my life. I was however managing it somehow and going ahead. But when it came to acting, I thought if I stammer while doing a one-page scene, then life’s over. By that time, the voice I have, I didn’t realise and neither did people realise it. So I was replaced. And I took it happily. But then I thought of fixing it." Sharad observed Amitabh Bachchan’s breathing pattern and started working on his stammer.

5/7

Kapil Sharma

The man, who makes everyone laugh, suffered depression and anxiety leading to which his show went off-air. Kapil took a break, worked on himself and returned with a bang. The funny man once said that it was with the support of his family that he was able to recover. Apart from Kapil, many other actors like Nimrit Kaur Ahluwalia, Vikas Gupta, and many others opened up about being depressed in recent times.

6/7

Shama Sikander

Shama Sikander, who rose to fame from the slice of life TV show, Yeh Meri Life Hai, came out in public about her being bipolar. In an interaction with an agency, the actress had said, "Depression or bipolar are mental situations where you tend to lose hope and desires and that is the darkest space any human being can ever be in. I don't think there is anything sadder than that. It's the worst a human being can go through and if you survive that you can survive anything, any pandemic. I died for five years every day thinking that I am going to die and I should die, and there is probably nothing for me to look forward to. So, I want to tell people who might feel vulnerable and helpless that you will find the light. You just have to hang in there." The actress shared that cognitive therapy helped her in healing.

Paras Chhabra

Bigg Boss 13 and Splitsvilla contestant Paras Chhabra had opened up about his stammering issue inside the Bigg Boss house. Speaking further about it, in an interview with ETimes TV, the young actor stated that he would get bullied by his co-contestants from Splitsvilla for his speech condition. "My mother has been the only person in my life who has motivated and pushed me, rest everyone has just made fun of my stammering issues. I remember my maternal grandfather would call me from Uttar Pradesh and would ask me to say ‘Aaj Sardar ki chutti hai’ and I would stammer and could not say that line. I did not have control of my language. But when I moved to Mumbai for acting and started reading scripts, I slowly worked on my issues. When I started giving auditions, I realised the most important thing is concentration and stammering happens to people who think a lot and want to express it fast. I think a lot and just blurt it out, sometimes I don’t even think and just say and you know because of it I have landed in trouble and have been trolled also. I started reading scripts during auditions and controlling my breath, speed of talking and working on my vocabulary. Slowly, it got sorted. I think the three-four years when I was not getting work and I was just giving auditions it helped me to solve my stammering issues. I think that waiting period helped me to work on my language, attitude, acting, stammering issues. During Bigg Boss 13, when Bigg Boss would ask me to read the task letter, I would feel proud of myself. I would feel really happy that people are understanding what I am reading and they are liking it. I was really glad that I have overcome that issue. I remember the co-contestants with me in Splitsvilla; they would pass comments that would give work to him, they would call me ‘hakla’. He won’t get work but I feel God is great that I have achieved success in life," said Paras Chhabra.
