​World Television Day: Tu Tu Main Main to Shararat, iconic TV shows we miss big time

Right from Tu Tu Main Main to Shararat, 90's TV shows catered to the entire family and had interesting storylines and plots. The 90's era TV shows taught everyone simple things about how to handle real problems in life. The shows inspired kids and gave them lessons for life. November 21st is celebrated as World Television Day and thanks to such memorable shows that 90's kids grew up watching. Today's supernatural drama shows lack of good content that older shows had. Few iconic TV shows will be remade including Sarabhai vs Sarabhai season 2. We have made a list of TV shows that have raised the level of shows and are more than just the saas-bahu drama shows. It's throwback Thursday, let us take a memory down the lane and remember our good old days shows -

Dekh Bhai Dekh (1993)

The popular sitcom Dekh Bhai Dekh was directed by Aanand Mahendroo. Within no time, the show became an instant hit among audiences and won hearts with their unique content. The show featured Sushma Seth, Navin Nishchol, Shekhar Suman, Farida Jalal, Deven Bhojani in pivotal roles. The story of the show revolved around three generations of the Diwan family which stayed in their ancestral bungalow in Mumbai. The show taught us how to deal with relationship problems, business issues, irritating in-laws and much more. Dekh Bhai Dekh's season 2 will surely grab audiences' attention. Audiences miss such shows which showcase the real problems in day to day's world.

​Tara (1993)

The TV show Tara aired in 1993 and was about a girl named Tara. The sitcom showcased the story of Tara and it for about 5 years. This was the first TV show which showcased a story about an urban woman. The show gave a taste of feminism to the audiences. The show featured Navneet Nishan in the lead role. Tara was a bold show and such shows are the need of the hour. We hope the directors re-run this show.

​Shanti (1994)

The first daily soap was launched in 1994 and was again re-aired. Actress Mandira Bedi played the main role of Shanti and the role inspired many. The show revolved around two friends and their dark secrets. The story takes an interesting turn when Shanti, who is a journalist by profession creates problems in their lives.

Tu Tu Main Main (1994)


Tu Tu Main Main came as a whiff of fresh air in saas-bahu ruled shows. This show explored the sarcastic and witty side of a saas-bahu relationship in a comical way. Their fights and arguments were on a light-hearted note and made everyone laugh and learn new things. Tu Tu Main Main even highlighted the fact that a bahu can have a motherly bond with her saas. The 90's kids have learned to argue and taunt skills from this show which will help them in their future.

Shrimaan Shrimati (1994)

Shrimaan Shrimati which was premiered from 1994 was a delight to many as it had unusual comedy and quirkiness. The show starred Jatin Kanakia, Rakesh Bedi, Reema Lagoo and Archana Puran Singh in the lead roles. The storyline of the show was about the male neighbors who loved each other's wife.

​Aahat (1995)

Aahat was the first horror show that was launched on Hindi TV screens. This show was quite scary during 90's era and gave sleepless nights to many. 90's kids had a hard time forgetting the scary scenes of Aahat as it has given nightmares to many.

​Hum Paanch (1995)

Hum Paanch has ruled TV screens for a longer time. The show tickled everyone's funny bone with their one-liners and left lots of memories on the audience's mind. The show featured Ashok Saraf, Vidya Balan, Rakhee Tandon, Bhairavi Raichura and Vandana Pathak in lead characters.

​Just Mohabbat (1996)

Just Mohabbat was premiered in 1996 and the storyline was based on the emotions a child who deals with problems during growing up. The show showcased a different side of hostel life and the 90's kids thoroughly enjoyed themselves while watching this show.

​Shaktimaan (1997)

Shaktimaan was the first superhero of all 90's kid who is quite close to everyone's hearts. Actor Mukesh Khanna played the role of Shaktimaan and also a common human being Pandit Gangadhar Vidhyadhar Mayadhar Omkarnath Shastri who used to work as a photographer for the newspaper Aaj Ki Aawaz. The show gained a lot of limelight as the kids used to imitate stunts shown in the sitcom.

Family No. 1 was a show about two families who had to share the same house. The show taught us to adjust and deal with problems of day to day life.

​Saans (1998)

Saans premiered in 1998 and was written and directed by Neena Gupta. The actress played the role of a loyal wife Priya who gets cheated upon by her husband. The show became quite popular among audiences and is still remembered for its strong viewpoint. The show redefined the image of strong women and this show is missed by everyone.

​Hip Hip Hurray (1998)

Hip Hip Hurray was the show that taught everything about friendship, relationship, bond, love and much more. The show was based on issues faced by teenagers and how to deal with it. The topics that the show showcased in their episodes were on - sexuality, peer pressure from parents, teachers, society, parent-child relationship and much more. The show should be re-run or remade as kids of this generation need to know how to deal with such situations and fight with it instead of going into depression. The show featured Nilanjana Sharma, Rushad Rana, Bhumika Chawla, Nauheed Cyrusi, Purab Kohli, Shweta Salve, Kishwar Merchant and others.

​Son Pari (2000)

Son Pari was the story of a girl named Fruity who had trouble in her life. Son Pari and her friend Altu came as the saviour in Fruity's life and used to help her to solve her life problems. Son Pari and Altu's magical mantra became quite popular among kids - 'Ittu pittu jhim patuta'.

​Shakalaka Boom Boom (2000)

Shakalaka Boom Boom story was a new concept that came in 2000. The story as based on a kid Sanju who used to draw with his magic pencil and the sketch used to turn into reality. The 90's kids wanted magic pencil like Sanju. As the show grabbed audiences' attention and became popular, the magic pencil was being sold in the market. Sanju's magic pencil created different magic on audiences and gave kids wings to fly.

​Office Office (2001)

Office Office, one of the best TV shows 90's kids had. This show definitely took a dig at the bureaucracy. The show starred Pankaj Kapoor, Asawari Joshi, Vrajesh Hirjee, Deven Bhojani and Manoj Pahwa in main roles. The story revolved around Mussadilal (Pankaj Kapoor) who was treated badly by the corrupt officials. Our country needs season 2 of Office Office as this show has prepared everyone to deal with the harsh reality of the world.

Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahi (2003)

Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahin was the story of an average-looking girl in braces falling in love with the handsome and rich business tycoon. The show featured Mona Singh in the main role of Jassi who falls for Apurva Agnihotri who is the rich businessman. Jassi's story touched the right chords among viewers and the storyline was appreciated by many. In 2003, Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi, Kahaani Ghar Ghar Ki ruled the TV screens, but Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahi came as a breath of fresh air for the audiences. (Photo - Instagram)

​Shararat (2003)
