On World Laughter Day, TV actors, who are known for their comic timing, reveal what gives them joy

By-Hasti Doshi , Farzana Patowari

While actors who are a part of comedy shows like Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah, Bhabiji Ghar Par Hai! or The Kapil Sharma Show have made people laugh out loud, what is it that makes them laugh? Is it another show, an actor or someone close to them? On the occasion of World Laughter Day today, we asked them this question, and here’s what they had to say...

2/8

Dilip Joshi

“People love my character Jethalal in Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah for his mannerisms and funny dialogues. But for me, it’s my mother and son who actually make me laugh. The puns and sarcasm they slip in, in our day-to-day conversations are hilarious. I must admit their comic timing is excellent.”

Sugandha Mishra

“I can laugh out loud at good jokes and pranks. Apart from that, I feel that kids are funny, and they bring a smile to my face because of their goofy behaviour. My husband, Sanket (Bhosale), is one person who makes me laugh all the time. I appreciate and love his sense of humour.”

4/8

Ali Asgar

“For me, it will be only the films of the great Mehmood sahab. His timeless classics like Do Phool, Pyar Kiye Jaa and Padosan are among my favourites. I have grown up watching his movies, and even today, I watch them time and again. There is not a single film of his which I don’t have with me!”

5/8

Raju Srivastava

“When I was a kid, Kishore Kumar made me laugh a lot. He was that one person who was not only an amazing singer, but as an actor, too, his comic timing was unmatchable. Apart from him, people like Johnny Lever and Govardhan Asrani have made me laugh a lot. When we all used to travel together or meet at events, these guys used to make me laugh like crazy with their jokes and puns.”

6/8

Rohitashv Gour

“To have a hearty laugh, one doesn’t need to go looking for it. Life provides you that in many ways through friends, family and your partner. When I go to marriages or meet friends, I observe things, and through my observations, I find many things funny, which make me laugh. So, I would say that it’s my life that brings me laughter in many ways.”

7/8

Shubhangi Atre

“Some cult comedy shows make me laugh a lot, and I really enjoy watching them even now. Another thing that gives me joy is when people appreciate my work and when I bring a smile to their faces through my characters. Some time ago, a hospital that treated cancer patients reached out to us and said that our show Bhabiji Ghar Par Hai! brings a lot of cheer in their lives. I was delighted to hear that, such things make me really happy.”

8/8

Delnaaz Irani

“I laugh at even something that may seem trivial, but it’s funny. Just watching a small comedy clip can make me laugh out loud. Recently, I had a hearty laugh when I was with Percy (her boyfriend) making a video. I feel he’s very funny at times and makes me laugh a lot. We all should be happy and smile as much as possible. That will keep people around us happy, too.”
